Last week the Senior School went to the Roxy Theatre to watch "Bugs", a very interesting documentary that looked at how insects are an important source of food and the many different types of bugs people eat around the world

As a cheap, sustainable, rich source of protein locusts, also known as grasshoppers, are a popular food source around the world and are even considered a delicacy in many countries.

New Zealand has a few species of native locusts, some of them are even bred to be eaten. We decided to order up a storm of locusts and try them for ourselves.

Hutt STEMM Challenge

As part of the annual "Hutt STEMM Festival' two teams from the Senior School competed in the 'STEMM Challenge'  held at the Dowse Art Gallery this week. Students competed in a quiz and complete practical activities that tested their knowledge and understanding in STEMM subjects.

The event was a great way to highlight the importance of STEMM subjects and gave students an opportunity to challenge themselves while having a lot of fun.

You can check out other STEMM Festival events by following this link http://www.huttstemm.nz/

Chemistry of Fireworks

We went into the STEM Room to explore the chemistry of fireworks!
We conducted an investigation into how burning different chemicals influences the colour and heat output of fire.

An exploding firework is basically a number of chemical reactions happening simultaneously or in rapid sequence. When you add some heat, you provide enough activation energy (the energy that kick-starts a chemical reaction) to make solid chemical compounds packed inside the firework combust (burn). With oxygen in the air they convert themselves into other chemicals, releasing smoke and exhaust gases such as carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and nitrogen in the process.

Our buddies in Room 9 shared their learning with us today

This Thursday our buddy class, Room 9, showed their big buddies from Room 22 their fabulous learning about anti-bullying.
They shared their knowledge about standing up to bullies, where they think a safe place to play is and the consequences of good and bad behaviour.
Well done Room 9! You did a great job of sharing your knowledge!
